Things have been crazy-busy lately. The last two weekends in a row, Katie and I have been displaying our various wares at Breezy Willow Farm. We love the farm, and the people there are really nice, but the craft show has been in an unheated shed-barn and it’s been a bit cold. The space is also pretty small, so if any actual customers are there, you’re kind of all up-ons, which makes me a little uncomfortable. Sadly, most of the people who have been coming through are members of the farm’s community-supported agriculture program (which is GREAT!) so they kind of just come to buy the stuff they always get at the farm, because that’s what they know they want. Which means not-so-much in the raising money for my wedding department. This weekend, however, we are also going to be involved in the INVASION OF THE CRAFTERS at Starry Night Coffee Shop & Bakery in Westminster, and that will (hopefully) be a little more lucrative, since there’s built-in patrons there.
Last weekend, KG had a show at Metro Gallery. Unfortunately, it was on Friday after I had worked 12.5 hours. I wasn’t really feeling it as a consequence. Don’t get me wrong, it was a fun time as always and I was excited to see all of my friends, but I was tired and not feeling very enthusiastic about anything. But I did get some Chipotle, and the opening band Secret Mountains was pretty good! We got a copy of their CD, I think if they play locally again anytime soon I might go check ‘em out.
So yeah, weekends have been reeeeally packed, which has kind of made the weeks feel long. I’ve also been crafting up a storm almost every waking moment that I’m not at work. It’s been really fun, but I’m about ready for the holidays to be over. (Oh yeah, I’m making Christmas gifts, too!) Tonight I have a 6 pm show (hence the not being at work at 12:45 on a Thursday afternoon). I like evening shows, they bring some variety from the usual routine. And man, let me tell you: the routine lately has been BO-RING at work. Our bookings are way down due to the recession, blah blah blah, so I’m not performing nearly as much as normal. That basically comes down to lots of down-time in the office, wanting to poke my eyeballs out. There’s been increasing talk of “restructuring,” and I’m kind of wishing they would just get around to laying people off already. I don’t want anyone at the MSC to have to lose their jobs, but it’s tiring always waiting for that other shoe to drop. Everyone’s stressed out all the time, it’s horrible.
Overall though, despite all of these trivialities, things have been pretty great lately. Aaron and I have just started watching LOST, which is super-addicting and awesome! And I think after all the Christmas crafting is finished, we’re really actually going to start moving ahead on the band project. We’ve put together some rough collaborations, and I think once we polish those demos up we’re going to send them to Joe to put some drumbeats on ‘em!! Yay! I can’t wait to get back to playing music.
Also, my puppets came! I’ve finished one script, and have enough puppets for two shows: I’m going to start doing children’s birthday parties, giving puppet shows about animals. I am thrilled! Now I just need to whip up some fliers and business cards and start getting my name out there. I’ve got a really good feeling about this; I hope it comes through!
Now I guess I should actually get ready and go to work. (Booo!)
Guess it’s been kind of a while. Um, been busy (compared to usual life). While the weather has been nice I’ve been trying to get out and take walks/bike rides to soak up some sun, fight off some of that Seasonal Affective business. Got my old job with the Science Center back, I start on Monday!! (YAY!) I figure after everything I went through this fall, I can deal with whatever silly complaints I had before.
Took a trip to NJ last weekend. It’s weird that my parents are getting ready to sell their house. I’m realizing now that I’ve had a lot of “lasts” there that I didn’t realize were lasts at the time: last Thanksgiving, last Christmas Eve picture with Jill, last summer night on my swing…maybe it’s better that I didn’t know at the time. That way those occasions weren’t bittersweet. But I am secretly hoping for just one more time on that swing. I will swing for 24 hours straight if I get it. (Okay maybe not. As long as my legs/butt can handle it.) It was also sort of surreal going through things in my childhood bedroom and deciding what to keep and what to throw away. Letters are the craziest. I left a bunch behind for my mom to dispose of; I didn’t have the heart to actually put them in the trash can myself.
I know it’s been a long time since I was Metuchen-Amy, and that I’m much more comfortable being Baltimore-Amy now, but it’s still a little hard letting go. It still feels like losing something.
On a lighter note, knitting is AWESOME. After Valentine’s Day I will post a knitting/sewing retrospective. I think that I’m going to be doing a lot of knitting on lunch breaks, etc. during the work week, so I’m going to try to get more practice sewing on the weekends. I think a lot of my frustration/rough edges is just from lack of practice. And from being too hard on myself.
Looking forward to the KG show at Talking Head tomorrow night. Mandy times, yay! (Mandy, I am sure, will be updating her blog very soon! hint, hint) I’m hoping the other bands will be enjoyable…I need a new favorite band. I still like my old faves, but they don’t give that same exhilarated feeling they used to. I miss that. I need a band to make me all starry-eyed at shows and blow up my car stereo. I thought that would be Jukebox the Ghost, but I’m kind of over it; only 3-4 songs on that album had real staying-power for me. One of those is a remix.
For now I believe it is time for taco salad. I am trying to be more conscious about where my food comes from, so I’m making more things at home. Last night’s taco salad was a definite hit. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype today!
(Good thing I start work Monday: I obviously need to get out more!
P )
Always blogging on an empty stomach. If anyone who wasn’t my friend ever read this blog, they’d probably think I weighed 400 pounds, the way I’m always talking about food. But once, again, I’m hungry. So I’ll make this short.
Last night was the KG/MC Lars/MC Frontalot show at the Ottobar. I gave my experimental cookies to old and new friends and they were a hit. (Some people even ate TWO!) KG played a really fun set, which was just the tiniest bit bitter-sweet since it’s the last time they’ll play in the area for a few months. Now I’m faced with a conundrum: do I start going to other local shows, knowing it probably won’t be as good or fun, or do I finish one of my ten half-finished hobbies instead? Or both? To be determined.
However, it was a night of unpleasant odors. There was a kid near me all through the KG set that smelled HORRIBLE. Like BO mixed with the crotch of a dead person. I am not exaggerating. AT ALL. Anyway, this Odiferous Ollie kept creeping closer and closer to me throughout the whole dance party, to the point where I couldn’t see Aaron and could hardly breathe (luckily that was pretty much the last song). I didn’t want to move because if I did I could no longer see Mandy-Pants. But I lived to tell the tale, that’s what matters.
Then it was a Mario Karty (yeah that’s right, I mashed up Kart and Party!) with Aaron and Marty! Oh the fun times. Our nerdiness even got a shoutout from some white rappers. I accidentally walked into the men’s room (AWKWARD) and then had my second dose of unpleasant odor happenings: someone in the bathroom had food poisoning or a tapeworm* or something. As soon as I entered the adjacent stall, I was wishing I had a WWI-issue gas mask. It was, in a word, brutal. And to make matters worse, I kept thinking I smelled whiffs of “Eau du Toilette” (a.k.a. poo) all evening, so I’m pretty sure it followed me out. UGH.
But I did get the chance to have some beers with Mandy and Greg, eat some rock-hard frozen chocolate bars, eat Chipotle, and laugh at the insane length of the white rappers’ sets and the large-and-in-charge female grinding the stair bannister and having fake orgasms. (Because at that point, really what could we do but laugh?) All in all, I call it an evening well-spent.
I’ve decided to make this the ultimate in lazy day-ery since the weather is crummy and I “partied like a rockstar” last night. This means almost everything I do today will be done from bed.** Yay! Embrace the inner slug!
*Tapeworms do not actually give you diarrhea.
**Obviously, if I decide to shower I will have to go to the bathroom for that.
